Frequency Shifts and Vow

چکیده

To study the effects of frequency shifts on vowel identification, a high-quality vocoder (STRAIGHT) was used to process a set of vowels in /hVd/ syllables spoken by two adult males, two adult females, and two children. Vowel identification accuracy was reduced when the spectrum envelope was shifted upward by a factor of 2.0, or downward by a factor of 0.6. Upward shifts produced a smaller decline for the vowels of adult males compared to the vowels of adult females and children, while downward shifts led to a smaller drop for children's vowels compared to those of adults. In several conditions, the drop in accuracy with spectrum envelope shifts was counteracted by introducing corresponding upward or downward shifts in fundamental frequency (F0). The results suggest that listeners' prior exposure to statistical regularities in natural speech is an important factor in the identification of frequency-shifted vowels.

Visualisation of wormholes in underwater sensor networks: a distributed approach

We propose a distributed mechanism, Dis-VoW, to detect wormhole attacks in under-water sensor networks. In Dis-VoW, every sensor reconstructs local network layout using multi-dimensional scaling. It detects the wormholes by visualising the distortions in edge lengths and angles among neighbouring sensors. The contributions include: • Dis-VoW does not depend on any special hardware • it provides...

Applying Catford’s Category Shifts to the Persian Translations of Three English Romantic Poems

This research aimed at evaluating the types and frequency of category shifts in the Persian translations of English poems based on Catford’s model of shifts. To this end, three English romantic poems of A Histo- ry of English Literature, namely, Blake’s ‘The Chimney Sweeper’, Coleridge’s ‘Kubla Khan’, and Keats’ ‘To Autumn’ along with their Persian t...

Improving Long PN-Code Acquisition in the Presence of Doppler Frequency Shifts

Wireless communication is the major form of connection nowadays. In most cases it exploits the benefits of the spread spectrum techniques to overcome channel introduced corruptions like Doppler residual frequency, noise, interference and jamming. These techniques also enhance the security and quality of the link. Using long spreading pseudo-noise codes provides further security for the link tho...

A Linguistic Study on the Translation of Parvin E’tesami’s Poems into English Using Catford’s Category Shifts

The present study aimed to investigate the translation into English by Alaeddin Pazargadi of Parvin E’tesami’s poems; in particular, it attempted to analyze the structural elements such as verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, articles, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections in them. Considering the relationship between Linguistics and Translation Studies, the theoretical framewor...

Frequency Response Analysis of a Capacitive Micro-beam Resonator Considering Residual and Axial Stresses and Temperature Changes Effects

This paper presents a study on the frequency response of a capacitive micro-beam resonator under various applied stresses. The governing equation whose solution holds the answer to all our questions about the mechanical behavior is the nonlinear electrostatic equation. Due to the nonlinearity and complexity of the derived equation analytical solution are not generally available; therefore, the ...
